Kolkata's metro commuters faced significant hassle on Monday, the first busy day of the week, after a technical snag led to a major disruption in service. Metro operations were completely halted for approximately 15 minutes on a crucial stretch of the line, leaving thousands of daily passengers stranded and causing widespread frustration. The incident, which occurred during the late morning hours, highlights the vulnerabilities of the city's primary public transport system.
According to sources from the Kolkata Metro Rail, the service disruption began around 11:30 AM with delays on the Dakshineswar-bound line. The situation worsened by 12:00 PM when all metro services towards Dakshineswar came to a complete standstill. This abrupt halt left a metro train stranded at the Girish Park station, leading to a ripple effect of delays down the line.
The cause of the sudden service interruption was identified as a power supply issue on the tracks between the Dum Dum and Noapara metro stations. This technical glitch prevented trains from moving forward, directly impacting the schedule and stranding commuters on their way to work and other commitments. The swift diagnosis of the problem was key, but its resolution still took time, frustrating passengers.
Commuters heading towards Dakshineswar from various stations were the hardest hit. The short but critical 15-minute halt at a time when the metro is packed with passengers meant schedules were thrown off and people were left waiting on platforms. However, metro services on the opposite route, from Dakshineswar to Shahid Khudiram, remained normal, providing some relief to passengers traveling in that direction.
In response to the incident, the metro authorities mobilized their teams to rectify the power issue as quickly as possible. Despite the prompt action, the sudden failure on a weekday morning led to chaos and inconvenience for thousands. The incident has once again brought attention to the frequent technical problems that plague the metro system, raising questions about its reliability.
